Toy Design Project
How can we collaborate to design and build a children's toy that has moving parts, is durable and is fun to play with?
Overview - Recognizing that many children in our community are living in poverty and often have to go without many toys at Christmas (or year round). We will work collaboratively to design and construct toys using wood, and metal and art processes. These toys will be presented to the community in an exhibition/silent auction, then donated to children in our community, through Christmas Amalgamated.
Presentation of Learning - Thursday, December 8th, 6:00 - 7:00pm 1. To begin, Sa-Hali Art students visited an enthusiastic group of Grade Four students at Summit Elementary. Together they began the brainstorm process and developed some ideas for possible toys. The students had a box full of random wood and metal pieces to explore and contemplate...
3. The students from Mr Horvat's Woodshop and Sandhu's Metalshop classes began the process of building the toys. A lot of planning and creative problem solving was required to interpret the concept art and begin building toy pieces.
5. On Friday, December 2nd, we look forward to having Mrs. Lanyon's Grade 4 class join us - Santa's Workshop" style - to finish assembling all the pieces and preparing for our Presentation of Learning.

The toys are finished!
This is a collaborative project between, Summit Elementary Grade four, Sa-Hali Secondary Art 9/10, Wood Technology 11/12, and Metal Work 9-12. 2. Art students then worked with the brainstorming sheets to create more concrete design drafts. These drafts were sent to the wood shop and metal shop students to evaluate what could and could not be built with the material and tools available at Sa-Hali.
4. As the toy pieces came back from the wood and metal shop, art students began the process of bringing the toys to life with paint. Students were required to come up with specific colour schemes and practice paint control in order to achieve a quality product in the end.
This project is in progress. Check back here for updates...
6. Presentation of Learning
Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Presentation of Learning! Little kids and big kids all enjoyed checking out these toys. Through the toy auction and direct donations, we were able to raise over $500 for Christmas Amalgamated!! I am a Superhero Project

A collaborative project between, Pacific Way Elementary (Grade one), Sa-Hali Secondary (Art 9/10), and the DigiPen Tech Academy.
Driving Question - How can we use traditional and technology enhanced art processes to bring to life the art of Grade One Superhero designs? For this project, Art students mentored Grade One students as they designed original superheros. The Art students were then given time to redesign the Superheroes. The challenge was to apply more mature image development strategies, while maintaining the intent of the original Grade One creations. The finished images were then taken to the DigiPen Tech Academy where they were digitized and animated - bringing to life the Superheros and their special powers! Finally all 70 students will come together for a community Presentation of Learning, highlighting the artistic processes and final outcomes. November 8th - 11:30 - 12:30, Sa-Hali Library |
Students teaching students...at Pacific Way Elementary. Art 9/10 students guide the Grade Ones through image development strategies - proportion, dynamic positions, special attributes and facial expressions.
Then it was back to the Art room to transition the Grade One artworks...
Students teaching students...in the DigiPen lab. DigiPen students teach the Art 9/10 class to recreate the superheroes on the computer - capturing images, building layers and beginning initial game animations!
Students teaching students...in the DigiPen Lab. Pacific Way Grade 1 students joined the DigiPen students and were given the opportunity to view their characters in the computer and make suggestions for enhancements and changes before the Presentation of Learning.

And now for the real fun! Today we all came together to share our learning and have fun playing with our digital characters!
Super Hero Project
The first day we visited Pacific way I was very excited to start this new project and especially excited to meet my grade 1 buddy. When trying to recreate my buddy’s ideal super hero I really wanted to keep the characteristics of the first original drawing of the super hero by my buddy, but redraw it with more detail and more grown up. I felt a bit of pressure because I wanted to do my best to recreate the super hero the way my buddy expected it to look like , because I didn’t want to disappoint him. After working in the Digi pen lab I was amazed by how the students in the class knew so much about animation and how to create a character using pixilation. The most challenging part of this project for me was stance and structure of the super hero. I enjoyed meeting my buddy and creating a new creative super hero with him and the overall out come of the project. I think the collaboration of working with a younger buddy with a creative imagination and also working with students that are older and that have different skills in the Digi pen lab that are really cool to have, which made the project even better than a one person art piece. Yes this has been a very different project, but I loved it, I loved it because the overall project had ideas from more than just one person. I hope that my buddy in ecstatic and is happy with the outcome of their super hero.

Watercolour art inspiration - just in time for Mothers Day!
Grade 7 students got some extra lessons on Watercolour painting in the Sa-Hali art room. Playing with colours, different resists and painting techniques, these students made some awesome Mother's Day cards! Thanks for Bringing your class to Sa-Hali Mrs Chan!
Lucky for me to meet some very creative kids who will be joining us at Sa-Hali next year!
